Big cities influence the environment around them. For example, urban areas are typically warmer than their surroundings. Cities are strikingly visible in computer models that simulate the Earth's land surface. This visualization shows average surface temperature predicted by the Land Information System (LIS) for a day in June 2001. Only part of the global computation is shown, focusing on the highly urbanized northeast corridor in the United States, including the cities of Boston, New York,...

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - At NASA?s Kennedy Space Center, Space Shuttle Discovery, resting on the Mobile Launcher Platform, returns to the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) along the crawlerway, which seems to stretch to the Atlantic Ocean on the horizon. Once inside the VAB, it will be demated from its External Tank and lifted into the transfer aisle. On or about June 7, Discovery will be attached to its new tank and Solid Rocket Boosters, which are already in the VAB. Only the 15th rollback...

In two-dimensional space a subtle point that for the case of both space-space and momentum-momentum noncommuting, different from the case of only space-space noncommuting, the deformed Heisenberg-Weyl algebra in noncommutative space is not completely equivalent to the undeformed Heisenberg-Weyl algebra in commutative space is clarified. It follows that there is no well defined procedure to construct the deformed position-position coherent state or the deformed momentum-momentum coherent state...

The Ricci flow is an evolution system on metrics. For a given metric as initial data, its local existence and uniqueness on compact manifolds was first established by Hamilton \cite{Ha1}. Later on, De Turck \cite{De} gave a simplified proof. In the later of 80's, Shi \cite{Sh1} generalized the local existence result to complete noncompact manifolds. However, the uniqueness of the solutions to the Ricci flow on complete noncompact manifolds is still an open question. Recently it was found that...

The momentum and isospin dependence of the in-medium nucleon mass are studied. Two definitions of the effective mass, i.e. the Dirac mass $m^*_D$ and the nonrelativistic mass $m^*_{NR}$ which parameterizes the energy spectrum, are compared. Both masses are determined from relativistic Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculations. The nonrelativistic mass shows a distinct peak around the Fermi momentum. The proton-neutron mass splitting in isospin asymmetric matter is $m^*_{D,n} m^*_{NR,p}$, which...

A new method for analyzing low density parity check (LDPC) codes and low density generator matrix (LDGM) codes under bit maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) decoding is introduced. The method is based on a rigorous approach to spin glasses developed by Francesco Guerra. It allows to construct lower bounds on the entropy of the transmitted message conditional to the received one. Based on heuristic statistical mechanics calculations, we conjecture such bounds to be tight. The result holds for...

There is a wide recognition that Josephson-junction-like structures intrinsic to the layered cuprate high temperature superconductors offer an attractive stage for exploiting possible applications to new quantum technologies. On the other hand the low energy quasiparticle excitations characteristically present in these d-wave superconductors may easily destruct the coherence required. Here we demonstrate for the first time the feasibility of macroscopic quantum tunneling in the intrinsic...

Let $\Gamma$ be a surface group of higher genus. Let $\rho\_0: \Gamma \to {PGL}(V)$ be a discrete faithful representation with image contained in the natural embedding of ${SL}(2, {\mathbb R})$ in ${PGL}(3, {\mathbb R})$ as a group preserving a point and a disjoint projective line in the projective plane. We prove that such a representation is $(G,Y)$-Anosov (following the terminology of \cite{labourieanosov}), where $Y$ is the frame bundle. More generally, we prove that all the deformations...

Motivated by the statistical evaluation of complex computer models, we deal with the issue of objective prior specification for the parameters of Gaussian processes. In particular, we derive the Jeffreys-rule, independence Jeffreys and reference priors for this situation, and prove that the resulting posterior distributions are proper under a quite general set of conditions. A proper flat prior strategy, based on maximum likelihood estimates, is also considered, and all priors are then compared...

This article extends the non-extensive entropy of Tsallis and uses this entropy to model an energy producing system in an absorbing heat bath. This modified non-extensive entropy is superficially identical to the one proposed by Tsallis, but also incorporates a ''hidden'' parameter that provides greater flexibility for modeling energy constraints. This modified non-extensive entropy also leads to a more generalized family of energy transformation functions and also exhibits the structural scale...

We present a quantitative analysis of the flavor physics of a SUSY SO(10) model proposed by Chang, Masiero, and Murayama, linking b -> s transitions to the large observed atmospheric neutrino mixing. We consider B_s-B_s-bar mixing and tau -> mu gamma and discuss their correlation paying careful attention to their different dependences on model parameters. Our analysis shows that an order-of-magnitude enhancement of the mass difference with respect to the Standard Model is possible and can...

We consider a compact binary system in which a Wolf-Rayet star supplies matter onto a stellar mass black hole or a neutron star. This matter forms an accretion disk which ejects a jet as observed in Galactic microquasars. A part of the jet kinetic energy, typically 10%, can be transfered to relativistic nuclei. These nuclei lose nucleons as a result of photo-disintegration process in collisions with thermal photons from the accretion disk and the massive star. Due to the head on photon-nucleus...

Motivated by the recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements on one-dimensional Mott insulators, SrCuO${}_{2}$ and Na${}_{0.96}$V${}_{2}$O${}_{5}$, we examine the single-particle spectral weight of the one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model at half-filling. We are particularly interested in the temperature dependence of the spinon and holon excitations. For this reason, we have performed the dynamical density matrix renormalization group and determinantal quantum Monte...

Light deflection in the post-linear gravitational field of two bounded point-like masses is treated. Both the light source and the observer are assumed to be located at infinity in an asymptotically flat space. The equations of light propagation are explicitly integrated to the second order in $G/c^2$. Some of the integrals are evaluated by making use of an expansion in powers of the ratio of the relative separation distance to the impact parameter $(r_{12}/\xi)$. A discussion of which orders...

The goal of this paper is to describe the application of quasi-likelihood estimating equations for spatially correlated binary data. In this paper, a logistic function is used to model the marginal probability of binary responses in terms of parameters of interest. With mild assumptions on the correlations, the Leonov-Shiryaev formula combined with a comparison of characteristic functions can be used to establish asymptotic normality for linear combinations of the binary responses. The...

Anatahan Volcano contains the largest known caldera (crater) in the Northern Mariana Islands. The volcano has been erupting off and on since its largest historical eruption on May 10, 2003, spewing clouds of volcanic gases and ash across a wide region of the Pacific Ocean. This pair of images shows volcanic emissions spread across hundreds of kilometers in the Pacific. The top image shows seemingly tiny Anatahan Island at far right, while the left-hand side of the scene is clouded with volcanic...

The formation of stripes in six-leg Hubbard ladders with cylindrical boundary conditions is investigated for two different hole dopings, where the amplitude of the hole density modulation is determined in the limits of vanishing DMRG truncation errors and infinitely long ladders. The results give strong evidence that stripes exist in the ground state of these systems for strong but not for weak Hubbard couplings. The doping dependence of these findings is analysed.

Suppose that P_{\theta}(g) is a linear functional of a Dirichlet process with shape \theta H, where \theta >0 is the total mass and H is a fixed probability measure. This paper describes how one can use the well-known Bayesian prior to posterior analysis of the Dirichlet process, and a posterior calculus for Gamma processes to ascertain properties of linear functionals of Dirichlet processes. In particular, in conjunction with a Gamma identity, we show easily that a generalized...
